German Sustainability Award
elka-Holzwerke from Morbach won the German Sustainability Award 2025 in the “Companies” competition. In its reasoning, the expert jury counts elka among the pioneers of transformation in the German economy.
120 years of wood
elka has been working with the renewable raw material wood since 1906. The evidence: chain of custody certification under PEFC and FSC®, an energy management system certified to DIN EN ISO 50001, and plant-specific environmental product declarations for chipboard, esb and vita panels.
Low-emission wood-based materials
The Blue Angel ecolabel (basis of award DE-UZ 76) is held by the esb PLUS P5 chipboard in thicknesses of 9–30 mm and by the elka VITA three-layer solid wood panel in spruce, qualities AB/B and B/C.
SHI product passports issued by the Sentinel Holding Institut are available for esb Plus (no. 12988-10-1004) and the vita natural wood panel (no. 12988-10-1005).
Environmental product declarations
Plant-specific environmental product declarations are available for our chipboard and esb boards (EPD-ELK-20260448-IBA1-DE, valid until 20 July 2031) and for the vita natural wood panel (EPD-ELK-20250639-IBA3-DE, valid until 3 August 2031). The programme operator is Institut Bauen und Umwelt e.V. (IBU). An EPD reports environmental impacts; it does not assess them.
Sustainable forestry
Our wood comes mainly from the region; certified wood takes priority in purchasing. elka holds chain of custody certification under PEFC (DINC-PEFC-COC-000341, valid until 28 February 2029) and FSC® (FSC-C100151, valid until 21 July 2030). These certifications include the PEFC™(Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) and the FSC®(Forest Stewardship Council®).
Energy management system
Our energy management system is certified to DIN EN ISO 50001:2018. We record and analyse our energy consumption, identify savings potential and implement measures for more efficient energy use. The system is reviewed regularly by an independent certification body. The electricity used to produce our chipboard and esb boards comes entirely from wind (80 %) and solar power (20 %), evidenced by guarantees of origin.
